COMMON WEALTH GAMES 2014 – Sports Current Affairs & GK for SBI/IBPS: The 20th commonwealth games 2014 were held at Glasgow, Scotland. The opening ceremony for the commonwealth games were held at Celtic park and closing ceremony was held at Hampden Park. The motto of the 2014 common wealth games is People, Place, and Passion. It was the largest multi sport event consisting of 261 events in 18 different sports. 71 different nations and territories participated in the games. There were total 4,947 athletes had participated. Mike Hooper was the chief executive of the commonwealth games federation. This event was success for the home nations of the United Kingdom with England, Wales and the host city Scotland. England has topped the medal table for the first time in the history of the common wealth games since 1986.

The medals won by Indians are :

  • The country Gambia had withdrawn in the taking participation in the common wealth games.
  • A total of 22-Para sport events were organized in five different sports and Para track cycling was held for the first time.
  • In 2010 Archery and tennis was replaced by triathlon and judo.
  • In the event, total number of bronze medals was more than the gold and silver medals.
  • There was no bronze medal awarded in men’s synchronized in 10 metre platform.
  • England topped the country list with maximum medals awarded with 58 gold medals, 59 silver medals and 57 bronze medals.
  • Australia stood second in the list with 49 gold medal, 42 silver medals and 46 bronze medals.
  • Canada stood third in the list with 32 gold medals, 16 silver medal and 34 bronze medals.
  • India stood fifth in the countries list winning 15 gold medal, 30 silver medal and 19 bronze medals.
  • In men’s wrestling, 65kg freestyle yogeshwar dutt won gold medal in this event. He defeated canada’s Jevon balfour.
  • In men’s 75kg freestyle wrestling Sushil kumar defeated Qamar abbas of Pakistan and clinched the gold medal to India.
  • In 57kg freestyle men’s wrestling amit kumar claimed gold medal by defeating Nigerian Ebikweminomo welson.
  • In 55kg women’s freestyle wrestling babita kumari won the gold medal by defeating Canada’s Brittanee Laverdure.
  • In women’s 48kg freestyle wrestling youngest wrestler vinesh phogat defeated yana Ratttigan of England.
Shooting
  • In men’s 50m pistol shooting Jitu rai won the gold medal and Gurpal singh clinched the silver medal.
  • In men’s 10m air rifle former Olympic gold medallist Abhinav bindra won his first gold medal at common wealth games.
  • In women’s 25m pistol shooting Rahi sarnobat defeated anisa sayyed to clinched the gold medal.
  • Apurvi Chandela won her first international gold medal in women’s 10m air rifle shooting.
Weightlifting
  • Satish Sivalingam won the gold medal at men’s  77kg weightlifting. And ravi katulu clinched the silver medal in 77kg weightlifting.
  • In 56kg men’s weightlifting Sukhen dey claimed the gold medal.
  • K sanjita chanu won gold medal in women’s 48kg weightlifting category.
Vikas gowda is the first men to the gold medal at the discus throw event at 2014 common wealth games.
Dipika pallikal and Joshana chinappa deafeated England’s Jenny duncalf and Laura massaro and gave India their first Squash gold medal.
Paupalli Kashyap was the first Indian men to win the medal at badminton after 32 years. He defeated Singapore’s Derek Wong.
